Emphasise (v., British) / emphasize (American) — to give particular importance or stress to something in writing or speech.

意義跟 stress 一樣——但 emphasise 在 IELTS 學術寫作裡更道地。

五大搭配（Band 7+）

  1. emphasise the importance of + N/V-ing — The report emphasises the importance of early intervention.
  2. emphasise the need for + N — Experts emphasise the need for stricter air-quality standards.
  3. emphasise the role of + N — Recent studies emphasise the role of sleep in memory consolidation.
  4. emphasise that + clause — The minister emphasised that no decision had yet been made.
  5. emphasise the fact that + clause — Critics emphasise the fact that costs have risen sharply.

常見錯誤

搭配僵化：考生反覆只用 emphasise the importance——膩。一篇文章想用兩次以上？換 emphasise the need for / emphasise the role of。

拼字注意：英式 emphasise / 美式 emphasize——IELTS 都接受，但全文要統一。別一段 emphasise、一段 emphasize。

Register 通用：Speaking 與 Writing 都自然——Part 3 思辨題與 Task 2 立論段都好用。

動作主詞：常用主詞包含 experts / researchers / studies / the report / the author——避免 I emphasise（IELTS 不鼓勵第一人稱）。

同等級替換（Band 7+）

  • Stress — The report stresses the urgency of climate action.（最簡潔、最安全）
  • Highlight — Recent data highlight the gap between rural and urban schools.（強調「凸顯」）
