字義

Insofar as (conj.) — to the extent that; only to the degree that. Used to introduce a clause that limits or qualifies the scope of a statement.

意義是 to the extent that——但 insofar as 更精簡、更學術，常用於有條件的肯定。

常見錯誤

句型一（最常用）：[主句], insofar as + 子句 — 在主句之後，用 insofar as 限定範圍。

  • The reform worked, insofar as it cut waiting times. ✓

句型二（句首）：Insofar as + 子句, [主句] — 也合法，但較少。

  • Insofar as we can measure happiness, money does correlate with it. ✓

禁忌：別寫 in so far as（拆三字）——現代 IELTS 寫作偏好 insofar as（一個字）。

Register 是非常書面的字：Speaking 千萬別用，會像在朗讀哲學論文。Task 2 一篇用一次最有效，通常放在「我承認對方有理，但範圍有限」的反駁段。

意義偏移：別把 insofar as 當 because——它強調範圍／程度的限定，不是因果。

  • I agree with him insofar as the data is reliable. ✓（限定）
  • I agree with him because the data is reliable. ✓（因果）——意思不同。

同等級替換（Band 7+）

  • To the extent that — The plan succeeds to the extent that it engages parents.（更直白、最安全）
  • As far as — As far as I can tell, the trend is reversing.（口語感稍重）
