Tackle (v.) — to make a determined effort to deal with a difficult problem or situation, without necessarily resolving it completely.
- Governments must tackle climate change through coordinated international action.
- The new task force will tackle rising youth unemployment in the region.
- Schools need to tackle bullying with clear policies and consistent enforcement.
- We cannot tackle obesity without addressing the wider food environment.
- Companies are increasingly being asked to tackle the gender pay gap themselves.
意義偏移:別把 tackle 當 solve——Tackle a problem 不保證解決;solve a problem 才保證。
搭配記住四組:tackle a problem / tackle an issue / tackle a challenge / tackle inequality。
(Band 7+)
- Address — The report addresses long-standing concerns about housing.(更中性、書面)
- Confront — We must confront the reality of an ageing population.(更強烈、有對抗感)
試試看
下次 Task 2 政策段,把 governments should solve this problem 換成 governments should tackle this issue head-on——更務實、更 Band 7+。
