Listening Transcript
Hannah: Theo, can I run my dissertation idea past you? I'm meeting our supervisor on Friday and I want it tighter.
Theo: Sure. What have you got?
Hannah: Right — working title: "The impact of social media on adolescent mental health."
Theo: Honestly, that's huge. You'd be reading for two years.
Hannah: That's what my flatmate said too. So you'd narrow it?
Theo: I'd narrow it three ways. First, pick one platform — Instagram, TikTok, whichever. Second, pick one outcome — anxiety, body image, sleep. Third, pick one age band, like fourteen to sixteen, not the whole adolescent range.
Hannah: That's much sharper. So maybe — TikTok use and sleep quality among fifteen-year-olds?
Theo: That's publishable. What method are you thinking?
Hannah: I was thinking surveys. Big sample, quantitative.
Theo: A survey would work, but for sleep quality specifically — self-reported sleep is notoriously unreliable. People misremember.
Hannah: Good point. So... interviews instead?
Theo: Interviews for depth, but you'd only get maybe twelve participants in the time we have. The findings wouldn't generalise.
Hannah: Mixed methods, then? Survey first, interviews to follow up the interesting cases?
Theo: That's the gold standard, but realistically — for an undergraduate dissertation, with a March deadline — you'd be over-stretched. I'd pick one cleanly.
Hannah: If I have to pick one... interviews, then. I'd rather have rich data on a small sample than thin data on a big one.
Theo: Reasonable. How many interviewees can you actually recruit?
Hannah: I was hoping fifteen. My old college could probably help.
Theo: Fifteen is ambitious for a one-person project. Most undergraduate qualitative dissertations are eight to ten.
Hannah: Let's say ten then.
Theo: Ten is right. Now — ethics. You're interviewing minors. Have you started the ethics application?
Hannah: Not yet. I assumed I had a few weeks.
Theo: Ethics for under-eighteens is the slow lane — at least six weeks, sometimes eight. You should start the form this week or you'll lose your interview window.
Hannah: Okay, I'll do it Sunday.
Theo: One more thing — recording. Will you record?
Hannah: Audio only. Video feels intrusive for fifteen-year-olds.
Theo: Sensible. And transcription — manual or software?
Hannah: Software's faster but I've heard the accuracy is poor for teenage speech.
Theo: It's improved a lot. I'd use software for the first pass, then clean it manually. Saves about fifty percent of the time.
Hannah: That works. Right — I owe you a coffee.

| # | Task / decision | Who? | |---|--------------------------------------------------|---------| | 6 | Will start the ethics application this Sunday | ___ | | 7 | Recording will be audio only | ___ | | 8 | Identified that ethics for minors take 6-8 weeks | ___ | | 9 | Agreed software-then-manual transcription | ___ | | 10| Owes the other person a coffee | ___ |
Answer Key with Trap Analysis
| # | Answer | Key moment in transcript | 陷阱 / 注意 | |---|---------------------|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------------------------| | 1 | B | "that's huge. You'd be reading for two years" | huge = too broad。 | | 2 | B | "TikTok use and sleep quality among fifteen-year-olds" | 干擾:A、C 都是討論中提過的「可能方向」,B 才是 Hannah 拍板。 | | 3 | B | "self-reported sleep is notoriously unreliable. People misremember" | 直述。 | | 4 | C | "If I have to pick one... interviews, then" | 干擾:先討論 surveys、再 interviews、再 mixed,最終決定 interviews。 | | 5 | B | "Let's say ten then" | 干擾:Hannah 想 15、Theo 說 8-10、最後共識 10。 | | 6 | A | "Okay, I'll do it Sunday"(Hannah 說) | Hannah 親口承諾。 | | 7 | A | "Audio only. Video feels intrusive"(Hannah 決定) | Hannah 的選擇,Theo 同意但不是執行者。 | | 8 | B | "Ethics for under-eighteens is the slow lane — at least six weeks" | Theo | | 9 | C | "I'd use software for the first pass, then clean it manually" + That works | Theo 提案、Hannah 接受 — 共識。 | | 10| A | "I owe you a coffee"(Hannah 對 Theo 說) | 句末 Hannah 說的話。 |
If I have to pick one
Recording will be audio only — 動作的執行者是訪談者 Hannah。
- That's much sharper / publishable / reasonable → 接受對方意見 - If I have to pick one / let's say X then → 最終定案 - That's the gold standard, but realistically → 理論認同但實務否決 - Sensible / That works → 共識成立
