Good morning everyone, and welcome to Hartwell Industries. My name's Patricia, I'm the HR business partner, and I'll be running through the practical side of starting with us today. Take notes — there's a lot.
Let's start with working hours. Standard hours are nine to five thirty, with one hour for lunch. However, we operate flexible working — you can choose to start any time between eight and ten, as long as you complete eight working hours and are present for the core period, which is ten in the morning until three in the afternoon. So if you start at eight, you can finish at four thirty.
Next, clocking in. We use a swipe-card system at all entry points. Your card will be issued at the end of today's session — please don't lose it; replacements cost twenty pounds, deducted from your salary. The card also gets you into the staff car park, but you'll need a separate parking permit, available from facilities for an annual fee of forty pounds.
Now a few words on the building. We occupy three floors. The ground floor has reception, the staff canteen, and the wellness room — that's a quiet space for prayer or breaks. The first floor is mostly engineering and IT. The second floor is finance, HR — that's me — and the boardroom. Crucially, the second-floor coffee machine is much better than the ones on the other floors, so feel free to make the trip up.
A note on departments. Engineering runs the longest hours but has the most flexibility on remote working — engineers can work from home up to three days a week. Finance has stricter on-site rules — minimum four days in office per week, due to data sensitivity. Marketing, on the third floor, has a hot-desk policy — no fixed seats — and tends to use shared meeting rooms. HR is somewhere in between — two to three days remote, fixed desks.
Onto lunch and breaks. The canteen is open from eleven thirty to two, with a hot meal subsidised at three pounds for staff. Hot drinks from the machines are free — though the canteen sells better coffee for one pound. Smoking is permitted only in the designated area at the rear of the building — not on the front steps.
A few words on IT. Your laptop and accounts will be set up by the end of today. Initial password is your employee number followed by the word "Hartwell" — you'll be prompted to change it on first login. The IT helpdesk is on the first floor, extension four-five-six. Important: never share your password, even with IT — they'll never ask for it.
Visitors and security. Visitors must sign in at reception and wear a visitor badge at all times. They must be accompanied — they cannot wander the building alone, except in the canteen and ground-floor reception area, where they may sit unaccompanied while waiting.
Finally, support. There's a buddy programme for new joiners — your buddy will reach you in your first week. Take advantage. Any questions throughout, my office is on the second floor, room two-one-five.

Visitors must... except... where they may sit unaccompanied。
