Welcome, everyone, to the Royal Crescent Theatre. My name's Beatrice, and I'll be your tour guide for the next ninety minutes. Before we head backstage, let me give you a quick orientation of the building so you can find your way after the tour.

We're standing now in the front foyer, which doubles as the box office and the bar. As you came in, you may have noticed the cloakroom to the right of the main doors — please use it for any large bags before we go backstage; corridors are tight.

Through the doors directly behind me you enter the main auditorium. It seats 480 across the stalls and circle. To the left of the auditorium, accessed by a side door near the bar, is the studio theatre — that's our smaller, more experimental space, with a flexible 100-seat layout. And to the right of the auditorium, on the same level as the foyer, is the education suite — used for school workshops during the day.

Now we'll head backstage. From the auditorium, taking the door at stage right, we enter the wings — that's the immediate offstage area where actors wait for their cues. Just past the wings on your left is the green room. The name's traditional — it's not actually green; it's beige. That's where actors relax between scenes; please don't enter unless invited.

Continuing along the back corridor, on the left, you'll find the wardrobe department, where costumes are made and altered. Opposite wardrobe — that's on the right of the corridor — is wig and make-up. These two departments work closely together but used to be in separate buildings until 2018.

Past wardrobe, the corridor turns sharply right and opens onto the scene dock — that's the large workshop where sets are built and stored. The roller doors at the back of the scene dock open directly onto the loading bay, where lorries deliver materials. Above the scene dock — accessed by the spiral staircase you'll see — is the rehearsal room, where the cast works through scenes before moving to the main stage.

A note on history. The theatre opened in 1898, was rebuilt after a fire in 1923, and was Grade II listed in 1985. The 2018 refurbishment added the studio theatre and the education suite — neither existed before. Tonight's performance is "A Midsummer Night's Dream" — tickets at the box office, twenty-eight pounds standard, fifteen for under-twenty-fives.

Tours run every Wednesday and Saturday at two p.m. and last about ninety minutes — today's includes the wings, green room, and scene dock, but not the rehearsal room, as a company is using it. Photography is allowed only in the foyer and main auditorium. Please follow me, and stay together.
