Describe a historical place you visited / Describe an interesting period in history;Task

考生最常踩的雷:old building, long time ago, people in the past——Band 5 絕。Band 7+ 要 preservation, heritage site, chronicle, collective memory, cultural legacy

Arts

考生常用 very old——Examiner 要的是 dating back to the 18th centuryof considerable antiquity。

Some argue old buildings should be demolished for modern development; others say they must be preserved.

Few planning decisions carry more lasting consequence than choosing whether to preserve cultural heritage or clear it for new construction, and I would argue the default should be preservation wherever viable. Historic buildings, dating back to periods long before the present city took shape, anchor collective memory in ways that no plaque or digital archive can replicate. Once a heritage site is demolished, the neighbourhood loses a layer of cultural legacy that cannot be recovered — only imitated. Critics argue that strict conservation areas inflate housing costs, yet well-designed schemes routinely combine restoration with sympathetic new build, preserving façade and character while modernising interiors. Urban regeneration need not be synonymous with erasure. When a listed terrace is carefully restored, residents gain a home that stands the test of time, and the city retains the historical texture that makes it more than a collection of offices.
