Good morning everyone and welcome to Old Town Walking Tours. My name's Rachel, and I'll be guiding you for the next ninety minutes. Before we set off, just a few housekeeping points.

We're starting here at the Market Square, which is marked on your map. Please keep an eye on your belongings — it gets busy, especially on a Saturday like today. If you get separated from the group, the meeting point is back at this square, by the stone fountain — not the modern sculpture, the stone one. The fountain is our regroup point.

Now, I want to draw your attention to the buildings around us. Straight across the square from where we're standing, that grand Victorian building with the white columns — that's the Old Town Hall. It's no longer used for council meetings; those moved to a new site in 1998. Today it houses a small museum of local history. Entry is free, though donations are welcome.

On your left, just past the café with the blue awning, you'll see a narrow lane. That leads to Canon Street, where our first proper stop is. Canon Street is home to the city's oldest bookshop, opened in 1847 — and directly opposite it is the building we'll spend the most time at: the Thornbury Theatre. Now, it's often missed because the entrance is tucked between two shops, so do look carefully.

After the theatre, we'll continue east along Canon Street until we reach St Agnes Church. That's the one with the tall grey spire — you can already see it from here. Behind the church, there's a small cemetery where several well-known poets are buried, but we won't be going in; we'll pass along the northern side.

Our next stop from there is the Old Bridge. The bridge dates from the fourteenth century. Now, interestingly, the original bridge was actually built in the twelfth century but washed away in a flood — the current structure is a fourteenth-century rebuild.

Just before the bridge, to your right, you'll notice a red-brick warehouse — that was a grain store, now converted into a craft gallery. It's open until five today if anyone wants to return afterwards.

On the other side of the bridge, we'll turn right, not left. Turning left would take you down to the harbour; we're not going there today. Turning right leads us along the riverside path, past a row of fishermen's cottages, and ends at the Lighthouse Café for a break.

A final point — photography is welcome everywhere except inside the Theatre, where flash is not permitted. Tipping is entirely optional but always appreciated.
