Describe a film or TV show that you remember well.

¹ The film I remember most vividly is a Taiwanese coming-of-age movie called You Are the Apple of My Eye — in Mandarin, 那些年，我們一起追的女孩. ² It came out when I was in high school, and it became a kind of phenomenon among my generation.

³ The plot itself is fairly simple: it follows a group of schoolboys in a small town who are all, in their own clumsy ways, in love with the same quiet, top-of-the-class girl. ⁴ There's no big twist or action — just lessons skipped, exams failed, fights lost, and a long slow farewell that anyone who's ever been seventeen will recognise.

⁵ I watched it at home one rainy Saturday afternoon with my older brother Wei-Ming, on a laptop balanced on a cushion between us. ⁶ It was actually his idea — I'd been stressed out about university entrance exams, and he said I needed to switch off for a couple of hours and stop refreshing the practice-test website.

⁷ What I remember most isn't any particular scene, but the feeling afterwards. ⁸ Wei-Ming and I sat in the living room for a long time without saying anything, which is very unusual for us — we're usually the sort of brothers who argue about snacks within ten minutes. ⁹ I think we both realised that the version of ourselves the film was describing — teenagers who still had everything ahead of them, who could afford to be clumsy about love and careers — was already slipping away from us. ¹⁰ He was about to graduate from university, and I was about to leave home for the first time.

¹¹ That's why I remember it so clearly. ¹² It wasn't just a good film — it was the moment I realised I was genuinely growing up, and that growing up had a specific, bittersweet shape to it that a textbook could never have captured.
