Part 3
| 角度 | 題目範例 | |------|----------| | 寵物文化 | Why are people keeping more pets than before? | | 野生保育 | Whose responsibility is it to protect endangered species? | | 倫理爭議 | Should zoos still exist in the modern world? |
Q1. Why have pets become so popular in cities?
I'd say the rise of urban pet ownership reflects something deeper than just love of animals. As households shrink and people delay having children, pets fill an emotional gap that family used to occupy. On the other hand, arguably it has also become a lifestyle signal — a well-groomed dog tends to mark a certain class of urban life, especially in places like Taipei or Tokyo.
Q2. Is it ethical to keep wild animals in zoos?
Honestly, I'm torn. On one hand, modern conservation zoos play a real role in breeding endangered species and educating the public — the panda programmes are a clear example. On the other hand, much of what most zoos provide is closer to entertainment than research, and arguably the welfare cost to the animals isn't justified by selfie opportunities. So I'd say "good zoos yes, most zoos no".
Q3. Should governments do more to protect endangered species?
Generally speaking, yes — though the form matters. Simply banning hunting rarely works if the underlying poverty isn't addressed; communities living next to wildlife reserves need an economic stake in conservation. Costa Rica's eco-tourism model is often cited as a success because it makes living animals worth more than dead ones, which I think is the right principle.
Q4. Do you think humans treat animals worse than they used to?
It really depends on which animals. Companion animals — dogs, cats — are arguably treated better than at any point in history; they're family members now, not working tools. Farm animals, on the other hand, live in conditions that would have shocked our grandparents — industrial scale changed everything. So the picture is genuinely uneven.
Q5. Should children be encouraged to spend more time with animals?
On the whole I'd say yes, with sensible limits. Research broadly suggests that early contact with animals supports empathy and emotional regulation, and probably immune development too. That said, it shouldn't be at the animals' expense — a pet bought as a "lesson" for a child and then abandoned does more harm than good. So encourage contact, but model responsibility.

"I love dogs. Dogs are very cute. Cats are also good."
Before: I love dogs. Many people love dogs.
After: I'd say the surge in pet ownership says something about modern urban life — as families shrink and work eats up our hours, pets fill emotional gaps that used to be filled by extended family. On the other hand, that emotional weight isn't always healthy for the animal.
