Q1. Is career success more important than work-life balance?

I’d push back on the framing slightly — they’re not really opposites for most people. Generally speaking, sustainable career success requires some level of balance, otherwise you burn out and your career stalls. That said, in early-career years, putting in extra hours often pays off long-term. So I’d say the priority shifts with life stage — heavy lifting in your 20s, more balance in your 30s and beyond.

Q2. Are young people today less ambitious than their parents were?

On the surface it can look that way, but I’d argue it’s mostly a redefinition of ambition. Their parents’ generation chased job security and home ownership — both of which are increasingly out of reach. Younger workers often define success as autonomy, flexibility and meaningful work, which is genuinely a different kind of ambition. In Taiwan you can see this in the rise of side projects and small businesses among under-30s.

Q3. Do men and women tend to define success differently?

The data suggests yes, though the gap has narrowed. Men more often cite earnings and seniority; women more often include relationships and impact. Arguably this reflects social expectations as much as preference — women still face the second-shift problem at home, so "success" gets framed around managing both spheres. As workplaces become more equal, those definitions are starting to converge.

Q4. Is high pay or meaningful work more important?

It really depends on income level. Below a certain threshold — enough for housing, food and modest comfort — money matters a lot for happiness. Above that threshold, the research consistently shows meaning and autonomy matter more than additional pay. So if you’re struggling, money first. If you’re comfortable, meaning first. Most career advice gets this wrong by treating it as a one-size answer.

Q5. Should people retire early if they can afford to?

It depends on what they’d retire to, honestly. People who retire into purpose — projects, family, learning — generally thrive. People who retire from stress without anything to retire towards often deteriorate quickly. Arguably the better goal is "financial independence" rather than retirement — having the option to work or not, but staying engaged with something meaningful. The FIRE movement gets this aspect right.

台灣考生常見陷阱:直接選「成功」

"Success is more important. Balance is for lazy people." ——這句話可能在台灣家庭飯桌很受歡迎,但在 Part 3 是 Band 5。

修正:拒絕二選一,重新框定:

I’d push back on the framing slightly — they’re not really opposites. Generally speaking, the most sustained career success comes from people who protect some balance, because burnout derails careers. On the other hand, in the early years some imbalance is unavoidable. So the question isn’t which to choose; it’s how the ratio shifts over a lifetime.
