Many companies are now allowing employees to work permanently from home, rather than commute to an office.

Do the advantages of permanent home working outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

我的立場:advantages slightly outweigh, but only with deliberate design

¹ Permanent home working, an arrangement that was almost unthinkable in mainstream office culture five years ago, has now been adopted by a sizeable minority of large employers. ² In my judgement the practice brings somewhat more good than harm, but the margin is narrower than its enthusiasts often suggest, and it depends heavily on how it is implemented.

³ The most evident benefit is the recovery of time and money currently lost to commuting. A 2024 Stanford-Pew joint survey covering 28,000 knowledge workers across nine economies found that full-time remote employees saved an average of 71 minutes per working day and roughly £2,400 a year on transport, food and work clothing. That recovered margin is often redirected into family time, exercise or skill-building, all of which raise long-term productivity rather than reducing it. Companies, in turn, gain access to talent pools well beyond their physical headquarters and frequently report lower attrition rates among parents and carers.

The drawbacks, however, are real and not always immediate. Junior employees in particular tend to lose the unstructured mentoring and tacit knowledge that office life passes on by accident, while collaboration on genuinely creative work appears to suffer when colleagues never share a room. Mental wellbeing can also deteriorate in poorly designed setups, where the boundary between professional and personal hours blurs and informal social contact disappears. ¹⁰ These costs are manageable, yet only when employers actively schedule in-person collaboration days and provide proper home-office support.

¹¹ Overall, I believe the advantages narrowly outweigh the disadvantages, but the result is not automatic. ¹² Permanent remote work rewards organisations that redesign their routines around it and quietly damages those that simply relocate the desk and hope for the best.

1. somewhat more good than harm

12:"rewards organisations that... and quietly damages those that..." ——雙 relative clause 對比,比 "It works for some companies but not others" 高階兩級。
