"Overuse or forced use of idioms can actually lower a candidate's Lexical Resource score."
Before(Band 5.5)
Examiner: Do you like cooking?
Candidate: Well, cooking is not my cup of tea. Once in a blue moon I cook, but most days I'm under the weather about the kitchen. At the end of the day, I'd rather hit the hay than slave over a hot stove. Every cloud has a silver lining though — I do enjoy eating!
After(Band 7)
Candidate: Honestly, cooking is not really my cup of tea. I only cook once in a blue moon — usually when friends come over. The rest of the time I'd rather just order in or grab something on the way home.
Before
Examiner: How was your weekend?
Candidate: It was great, but time flies and money doesn't grow on trees — so I stayed home.
After
Candidate: It was great, actually. Time really flies on the weekend — I feel like Saturday just disappeared.
Time flies
Before
Examiner: Did you enjoy your lunch?
Candidate: I was on cloud nine! It was over the moon!
On cloud nine / over the moon
After
Candidate: Yeah, it was really good — the noodles were exactly what I was craving.
Before
Candidate: I hit the nail on the head.
發音 "heat the nail in the head"——考官聽不出你在用慣用語,只聽到怪句子。
- 連音:hit-the / on-the
NAIL / HEAD
Before(Part 2 cue card)
My grandmother is over the moon every Sunday when we visit. She was over the moon when I got into university, and I was over the moon that she came to my graduation.
三個 over the moon——Lexical Resource 看到「詞彙匱乏」。
After
My grandmother is in high spirits every Sunday when we visit. She was over the moon when I got into university, and I was walking on air when she showed up at my graduation — I hadn't expected her to travel that far.
Before
Examiner: What do you think about education?
Candidate: Well, the early bird catches the worm. And where there's a will, there's a way. Rome wasn't built in a day, you know.
After
Candidate: I think education is really about building the right habits — getting into the routine of studying regularly, rather than cramming. In the long run, consistency matters much more than talent.
沒有慣用語但有 1 個(in the long run),且內容有深度——Band 7。
| 過時 idiom | 為什麼別用 | 替代 (更自然) | |-------------------------|-----------------------------------|--------------------| | It's raining cats and dogs | 幾乎只出現在教科書裡 | It's pouring / tipping it down | | As busy as a bee | 太可愛、像童書 | Swamped / run off my feet | | As happy as Larry | 很少人講,區域性強 | Over the moon / thrilled | | To kill two birds with one stone | 還可以但很常考生寫 | Efficient way to... / hit two goals at once | | Every Jack has his Jill | 沒人在用 | (skip — 直接說內容) |
如果你自己說了 "at the drop of a hat" 然後停下來想它什麼意思——別用。
講「時間很快」就用 time flies,不要硬接 every cloud has a silver lining(意思完全不同)。
Band 7
Before/After 對照(完整 Part 2)
題目:Describe a happy memory from your childhood.
Before(Band 5.5 —
My happiest memory is when I was over the moon, walking on air, and on cloud nine — all at the same time! It was my birthday, and time flies, but I still remember it like it was yesterday. My parents are the salt of the earth, and they went the extra mile to make it special. The cake was a piece of cake to eat, I was in seventh heaven, and every cloud has a silver lining because that day proved it.
Band 5.5。
After(Band 7 — 自然)
The happiest memory I can think of is my eighth birthday. My parents had planned a surprise trip to the beach — I had no idea until we pulled up at the coast. I was over the moon. We spent the whole day building sandcastles, eating ice cream until we felt sick, and watching the sunset from the pier.
What made it special wasn't just the day itself, but the fact that my parents had gone to so much trouble — they'd driven three hours, packed a picnic, and taken the day off work. Looking back now, I realise they went the extra mile for me, and that's why it still stands out in my mind all these years later.
只有 2 個慣用語(over the moon / go the extra mile)——每個都貼題、自然、間隔夠遠。Band 7。
