翻開 IELTS Speaking 公開評分表,Band 7 的 Lexical Resource 有一句白紙黑字:
"Uses some less common and idiomatic vocabulary... shows some awareness of style and collocation."
Band 6 沒有這一條。這是 6.5 升 7.0 最直接的卡關——口說詞彙夠、文法沒錯,就是少了「慣用語的自然感」,永遠差 0.5。
什麼是 idiomatic language?
它不只是成語(once in a blue moon),而是三類:
| 類別 | 中文 | 例子 | |----------------|-------------|-----------------------------------------| | Idioms 慣用語 | 成語 / 俚語 | hit the nail on the head(一針見血) | | Phrasal verbs | 片語動詞 | get along with(相處) | | Collocations | 搭配詞 | make a decision(做決定,不是 do) |
Band 7 要求三類都用得自然,不是全塞慣用語。
評分員眼中的「effectively」是什麼?
劍橋官方訓練手冊明確列出三個條件:
條件 1:Natural(自然)
說出來像一個生活在英語環境的人會說的話,不像查字典翻出來的。
Natural: I'm not really into cooking — it's not my thing.
Forced: I detest the culinary arts with every fibre of my being.
第二句每個字都對,但沒人這樣講話。評分員會判斷為 Band 6——「用了高級字但不自然」。
條件 2:Relevant(相關)
慣用語要貼合你正在說的主題。
Question: Do you enjoy cooking?
Relevant: To be honest, cooking is not my cup of tea. I tend to order in.
Irrelevant: To be honest, cooking is not my cup of tea. Every cloud has a silver lining though.
第二個 every cloud has a silver lining(否極泰來)跟主題無關——這叫「硬塞」。
條件 3:Not forced(不做作)
每題塞一個慣用語 = 做作。真實英語每 2-3 分鐘出現一個慣用表達,不是每句一個。
示範對話(Band 7)
Examiner: How often do you watch films?
Candidate: Honestly, not as often as I used to — once in a blue moon these days. With work and studying, I barely have the energy to sit through a two-hour movie by the end of the day. I'd rather just catch up on a short series.
- once in a blue moon — 貼題(頻率問題)、自然、不過度
- catch up on — phrasal verb,自然延伸
- 整段只有 2 個 idiom 類表達,剛好
示範對話(Band 6 堆砌)
Examiner: How often do you watch films?
Candidate: Once in a blue moon! Time flies, you know, and I'm always between a rock and a hard place with work. At the end of the day, films are not my cup of tea, but every cloud has a silver lining — sometimes I do watch a great one.
5 個慣用語塞進 4 句話——評分員立刻判定為「背的」。Lexical Resource 會從 7 扣回 6。
台灣考生三個最常見錯誤
錯誤 1:把慣用語當高級詞填鴨
記 100 個、考試全塞。結果每一個都用錯情境。記 20 個、每個都用對 5 倍更有效。
錯誤 2:只用 idioms,忽略 phrasal verbs
Get up / look into / come across / run out of 是英語人每天用的——但台灣考生覺得「太簡單」。Phrasal verbs 其實比 idioms 更能顯示英語程度。
錯誤 3:collocations 錯用
Make homework ❌ vs do homework ✓ — 評分員聽到瞬間扣分。這比不會 idiom 更嚴重。
本系列的學習順序
本系列共 10 篇,建議順序:
- 先讀 20 safe idioms for any topic——打好底
- 再分主題:time / work / feelings
- 補 phrasal verbs:everyday / work-study / relationships
- 修 collocations:have/make/do/take
- 最後看 常見錯誤——避免做作
黃金法則
整場 Speaking 考試用 2-3 個 idiom 就夠了,不是 20 個。
評分員要看的是「你會不會用」,不是「你背了多少」。把時間花在把 2-3 個練到自然反射,比記 50 個生硬亂塞好 10 倍。
