Phrasal verbs(片語動詞)是英語的生活骨幹——每 100 句英語對話大約出現 8-10 個。但台灣考生常常用「正式單字動詞」替代(postpone 而不是 put off、investigate 而不是 look into)。
諷刺的是:在 Speaking 裡,用 phrasal verb 反而比用大字更 Band 7,因為它代表「英語人自然會這樣講」。

關鍵觀念:可分 vs 不可分
Phrasal verbs 有兩種結構:
可分(Separable)— 受詞可以夾中間
- put on shoes = put shoes on
- turn off the lights = turn the lights off
- pick up the phone = pick the phone up
但代名詞必須夾中間:
- put them on ✓
- put on them ❌
不可分(Inseparable)— 受詞永遠在後
- look for keys ✓
- look keys for ❌
- come across a café ✓
考場 Q&A 示範
Q&A 1:What's your daily routine?
On weekdays I usually get up around 7, put on something comfortable, and grab a quick breakfast before heading out. My mum drops me off at the MRT station on her way to work. After classes I often hang out with friends at a café — we might try out a new bubble tea place, or just look for somewhere quiet to study. In the evening I try not to stay up too late, but I often end up putting off my homework until after dinner.
用了:get up / put on / drop off / hang out / try out / look for / stay up / put off——8 個 phrasal verbs,每個都自然。沒有任何 idiom,但這段聽起來很 Band 7。
Q&A 2:Have you ever tried to learn something new?
Last year I picked up photography, mostly by watching YouTube tutorials and coming across interesting accounts on Instagram. At first I wanted to give up because my photos kept turning out blurry, but I looked up some online courses and slowly got better. I've since run out of excuses not to practise — I even bring my camera whenever I go out.
用了:pick up / come across / give up / turn out / look up / run out of / go out——7 個。
Q&A 3:Do you prefer eating out or cooking at home?
Honestly I prefer cooking at home during the week, but on weekends I love eating out with friends. When we hang out at a new restaurant, it's more than just food — we catch up, try out dishes we'd never cook ourselves, and it feels like a mini-celebration of the week.
用了:eating out / hang out / try out / catch up——4 個,自然貼題。
三個常被「升級」錯誤的 phrasal verbs
誤區 1:get up → arise
❌ "I arise at 7am every morning."
Arise 是正式書面語。在 Speaking 講自己早上起床——不自然。Band 6.5 以下。
✅ "I get up at 7."
誤區 2:look for → search for
❌ "I spent the morning searching for my wallet."
Search for 不錯,但 look for 更自然、更日常。Speaking 用 look for。
誤區 3:put off → postpone
❌ "I postponed my homework."
Postpone 用在正式場合(會議、發表)。學生作業—— put off。
一個 Band 7 的秘訣
同一題答案裡混用 phrasal verbs + 單字動詞,顯示語體敏感度:
I usually get up early (phrasal), then I review my notes (single verb) before class. On big exam days I even wake up at 5am (phrasal) to revise everything systematically (adverb).
Phrasal 用在日常動作,單字動詞用在稍正式內容——這就是 Band 7 的 "awareness of style"。
練習任務
把下面這段「正式書面」改寫成自然口說(phrasal verbs 為主):
"I arose at 6:30am, dressed myself rapidly, and departed for the train station. On the way I encountered an old classmate. We had not met in five years."
參考答案:
"I got up at 6:30, put on my clothes quickly, and headed out for the train station. On the way I came across an old classmate. We hadn't met up in five years."
