Part 3
| 角度 | 題目範例 | |------|----------| | 媒介 | How has texting changed the way people communicate? | | 工作 | Can video calls really replace face-to-face meetings? | | 語言 | Will AI translation make language learning unnecessary? | | 關係 | Are friendships weaker now that most communication is digital? |
Q1. How has texting changed the way people communicate?
I'd say the deepest change is that we've made conversation asynchronous. You can carry on a chat across a whole day in fragments, which is genuinely useful for busy lives. On the other hand, arguably it has eroded the skill of real-time talk — long pauses are uncomfortable in person but normal on text, so younger speakers sometimes struggle when there's no edit button. So it's a trade-off, not a pure gain.
Q2. Can video calls fully replace face-to-face meetings?
Generally speaking, no — though they handle more than people initially expected. For information-sharing and routine check-ins, video is genuinely fine and saves enormous amounts of travel. On the other hand, for trust-building, negotiation, or sensitive feedback, the bandwidth of being in the same room — body language, micro-expressions, side conversations — still matters. So I'd say complementary rather than replacement.
Q3. Will AI translation make learning a foreign language unnecessary?
Honestly, I doubt it. AI translation has improved remarkably for technical and tourist contexts, and that's a real gain. On the other hand, language learning was never just about the words; it's about understanding how a culture thinks, building friendships, accessing humour and nuance. Arguably, AI handles the surface and leaves the depth untouched. So fluency will become more of a luxury skill than a necessity, but it won't disappear.
Q4. Are friendships weaker now that most communication is digital?
It tends to depend on whether the digital contact replaces or supplements face-to-face time. Research broadly suggests that for friends who also meet in person, digital contact strengthens the bond — you're more aware of each other's daily lives. For long-distance or purely online friendships, the picture is mixed; they can be deep, but they tend to be more fragile. So I'd say "amplifier rather than substitute".
Q5. How might communication change in the next 10 to 20 years?
Hard to say with confidence, but I'd expect real-time AI translation in earpieces to become normal, video calls to feel more spatial through headsets, and a partial backlash towards in-person events as digital fatigue grows. The deeper question is whether the basic forms — voice, text, face — will be joined by something genuinely new, or just gradually upgraded. My guess is mostly the latter.

重點:每題盡量出現 trade-off 句 —— "on the other hand / arguably / that said"。

"I use LINE every day. LINE is very convenient. I can send pictures."
Before: LINE is convenient. I use it every day.
After: Messaging apps have made conversation asynchronous in a way that wasn't possible before — a chat can stretch across a whole day in fragments. On the other hand, that convenience has arguably weakened our tolerance for real-time silence, which is partly why younger speakers find phone calls oddly stressful.
