² Overall, the campus evolved from a purely academic site into a much larger and more self-contained student community, with new sporting, research and social facilities added, and vehicles pushed to the periphery.
³ The most substantial construction took place to the west of the central square, where the original woodland was cleared to make way for a sizeable sports complex with an adjacent gym. ⁴ To the east, the existing science block was retained but supplemented by new research laboratories, effectively doubling the campus's research footprint.
⁵ The small cafeteria on the south side was converted into a full student union, giving the campus a dedicated social hub for the first time. ⁶ The main library was preserved and extended northwards, while the arts building remained unchanged. ⁷ Finally, the student car park was relocated outside the southern entrance, and a large fountain was installed at the centre of the square.
