¹ English now functions as the default working language of international science, diplomacy and much of the commercial internet, a role it has acquired with striking speed since the middle of the twentieth century. ² On balance, I believe the benefits of having a single global language outweigh the drawbacks, although the costs to speakers of other languages deserve sharper recognition than they commonly receive.
³ The principal advantage is genuine: a shared language dramatically lowers the cost of cooperation across borders. ⁴ Scientists publish findings that are immediately accessible to colleagues in dozens of countries, multinational teams can assemble without lengthy translation cycles, and individuals from small language communities gain access to educational materials and labour markets that would otherwise be closed. ⁵ A 2023 British Council estimate suggested that roughly 1.75 billion people now speak English with functional competence, representing a network of exchange possibilities unprecedented in human history. ⁶ For many Taiwanese professionals, for instance, English is precisely what makes a career in global technology possible.
