Describe a person you admire.

¹ The person I most admire is my paternal grandmother, Chen A-Mei, who's now 78 and still lives in the small town in Taitung where I grew up. ² I know her not so much as a relative but as the woman who practically raised me — my parents worked in Taipei, so from the age of two until I started high school, her house was home, and I spent almost every summer and most weekends there as well.

³ What makes her remarkable isn't anything dramatic or the kind of thing you'd put in a biography. ⁴ After my grandfather died of a stroke in his early forties, she ran a small beef-noodle stall by herself for nearly thirty years, raising three children on what a single bowl of noodles at forty New Taiwan dollars could earn. ⁵ She was up at four every morning to simmer the broth from scratch, and she never once complained about the hours or the aching legs — she simply treated hard work as something that needed doing.

⁶ The quality I admire most is her quiet resilience. ⁷ She isn't the sort of person who gives speeches or hands out advice; she teaches by example and lets you draw your own conclusions. ⁸ I watched her handle a cancer diagnosis in her late sixties with the same steady, unhurried attitude she brought to a busy lunchtime rush — just deal with what's in front of you, and keep going.

⁹ I admire her because she showed me what hard work and dignity actually look like, long before I was old enough to understand either. ¹⁰ Every time I feel sorry for myself over a deadline or a minor setback, I think of her standing over that stove at dawn, and whatever I'm complaining about suddenly seems very small. ¹¹ She still calls me every Sunday without fail, and honestly, those ten-minute phone calls have shaped me more than any teacher ever has.

The person I most admire is my eighth-grade English teacher, Mr. Liu. He wasn't the most qualified teacher in the school — he'd trained as an engineer before switching careers — but he was easily the most committed.

Probably the person I admire most is my mother. It's a bit of a cliché answer, but I genuinely mean it — and the reason has nothing to do with her being my mum.

There's a woman in our neighbourhood, Auntie Wang, who runs the small recycling station at the end of our lane. She's probably in her seventies, and most people walk past without noticing her — but she's one of the people I admire most.
