Cue card: Describe an important possession

¹ The possession I want to talk about is my grandfather's old film camera — a Pentax K1000 from the early 1980s that's now sitting on the top shelf in my bedroom. ² It's a heavy, mechanical, almost brutalist-looking thing, all metal and black leather, with a satisfying click every time you wind the film.

³ My grandfather bought it the year my mother was born, and he apparently carried it on every family trip for the next three decades. Boxes of his negatives are still stored at my parents' house — my entire childhood, and my mother's childhood, exists mainly because of this one camera. He passed away when I was 19, and my grandmother gave it to me a few weeks later, saying something like, "He'd have wanted someone who'd actually use it."

For about a year I was too intimidated to touch it, honestly. I eventually loaded a roll of film, got half of the photos badly underexposed, and slowly — over maybe two years of trial and error — figured out how to actually use it properly. Now it's the camera I take on trips I actually want to remember. Digital is obviously more practical, but there's something about the weight of it, the 36 exposures per roll, the waiting-for-the-prints part, that slows me down in a way I've come to value.

¹⁰ What makes it important isn't really the object — it's the line connecting my mother, my grandfather, and now me. ¹¹ A physical thing passing through three generations, still working, still quietly doing exactly what it was designed to do. ¹² That kind of object is very hard to replace, and I don't think I ever will.

Band 7+

具體度

  • Pentax K1000 from the early 1980s(具體品牌 + 年代)
  • the year my mother was born(情感錨點)
  • he passed away when I was 19(具體時間)
  • 36 exposures per roll(物品細節)

Lexical

  • brutalist-looking, satisfying click, intimidated, underexposed, trial and error
  • Idiomatic: the line connecting..., quietly doing exactly what it was designed to do

Grammar

  • Passive: Boxes of his negatives are still stored
  • Relative clause: ...a Pentax K1000 from the early 1980s that's now sitting...
  • Reported speech: saying something like, "He'd have wanted..."
  • Nuanced connectives: apparently, honestly, eventually, obviously, really

  • Event:

Looking back / What I've realised is...)?

考官聽了一整天的 "I want to describe my phone because it is very useful." 當你開口說 "The possession I want to talk about is my grandfather's old film camera..."
