Cue card: Describe a teacher who influenced you
¹ I'd like to talk about my high school English teacher, Mrs Chen, who taught me for three years and probably had more influence on my life than any other teacher I've had. ² She was in her late forties when I met her — small, softly spoken, but with this very direct way of looking at you when you spoke, as if she was actually listening rather than just waiting to talk.
³ The thing that made her different was that she treated us like adults. ⁴ Instead of drilling grammar exercises, she'd bring in articles from The Guardian or short stories by Raymond Carver, and she'd genuinely ask what we thought — not in a test-the-students way, but because she seemed curious. ⁵ One specific lesson stands out: I was 17, I'd written what I thought was a decent essay on environmental policy, and she handed it back with one line at the bottom: "You've described the problem well — now what do YOU actually think?" ⁶ I remember sitting with that for days. It was the first time an adult had suggested my opinion was worth anything.
