Examiner: How has travel changed in recent years?

Version A — Band 6(約 40 秒)

"I think travel has changed a lot in recent years. First, now it is easier to travel because the flights are cheaper than before. For example, when I was young, my family did not travel abroad because it was too expensive. But now many young people in Taiwan travel to Japan or Korea every year. Also, people use the internet to book hotels and flights. They don't need travel agents. And they use apps like Google Maps so they don't get lost. I think travel is more convenient now but also more people are going to the same places so it becomes very crowded."

Version B — Band 7(約 50 秒)

"I think travel has shifted quite a lot, actually, in maybe the last fifteen or twenty years. The most obvious change is affordability — low-cost carriers like AirAsia and Ryanair have basically turned international travel into something middle-income families can do regularly, which just wasn't the case for my parents' generation. On top of that, the whole booking process has moved online — platforms like Booking.com or Airbnb have cut out the travel agent almost completely.

But I think the more interesting shift is cultural — the rise of Instagram and TikTok has changed why people travel. People increasingly plan trips around photo spots rather than, say, learning about a place, which has led to this overcrowding problem in somewhere like Kyoto or Santorini. So travel is simultaneously more democratic and, in some ways, more superficial than it used to be."

Version C — Band 8(約 55 秒)

"I think travel has been transformed in a few quite distinct ways over the past two decades, and the changes aren't all pointing in the same direction, which is what makes it interesting.

The most visible shift is obviously cost — the rise of low-cost carriers has effectively democratised international travel, turning what was once a luxury into a fairly routine activity for middle-income households, at least in developed economies. Alongside that, the infrastructure of travel has been almost completely restructured by platforms: Booking.com, Airbnb, Google Maps — the traditional travel agent has been largely disintermediated.

But what I find more culturally significant is the subtler shift in motivation. Social media, especially Instagram, has turned certain destinations into backdrops for identity performance rather than places to encounter. You see it in the overcrowding of specific photo locations in Kyoto or Bali while the surrounding regions remain almost empty. So we've traded one kind of exclusivity — based on money — for another kind of flattening, where travel risks becoming a form of visual consumption. Whether that's a net gain is, I think, genuinely debatable."

1. Task Response —

| Band | 角度 | 典型證據 | |------|------|----------| | 6 | 以個人家庭為主、有列舉但無分析 | "when I was young, my family did not travel abroad because it was too expensive" — Part 1 口吻 | | 7 | 辨認兩類變化(affordability + 文化)| "But I think the more interesting shift is cultural — the rise of Instagram and TikTok has changed why people travel." | | 8 | 辨認張力 / 不同方向、結尾 open-ended | "the changes aren't all pointing in the same direction, which is what makes it interesting." |

2. Lexical Resource —

| Band | 關鍵詞 | 證據 | |------|--------|------| | 6 | changed a lot / cheaper / convenient / crowded | "travel is more convenient now but also more people are going to the same places" | | 7 | low-cost carriers / affordability / democratic / superficial / overcrowding | "travel is simultaneously more democratic and, in some ways, more superficial" | | 8 | transformed / democratised / disintermediated / identity performance / visual consumption / net gain | "the infrastructure of travel has been almost completely restructured by platforms" |

3. Grammatical Range

| Band | 句型 | 證據 | |------|------|------| | 6 | Simple + coordinator;first / also / and | "Also, people use the internet to book hotels and flights." | | 7 | Em-dash 插句、關係子句、比較級、混合時態 | "low-cost carriers like AirAsia and Ryanair have basically turned international travel into something middle-income families can do regularly, which just wasn't the case for my parents' generation." | | 8 | Nominalisation、抽象主詞、subjunctive、passive with embedded clauses | "travel risks becoming a form of visual consumption. Whether that's a net gain is, I think, genuinely debatable." |

4. Pronunciation / Discourse

| Band | 說話特徵 | 證據 | |------|----------|------| | 6 | 列舉式 First / Also — 像背稿 | "First, now it is easier..." | | 7 | 自然轉場(on top of that / but I think the more interesting shift...)| "On top of that, the whole booking process has moved online..." | | 8 | 後設討論(which is what makes it interesting / which I think is genuinely debatable)| "Whether that's a net gain is, I think, genuinely debatable." |

5. Argument Quality —

| Band | 抽象層次 | |------|----------| | 6 | 停在事實層(cheaper, internet, apps)| | 7 | 到達趨勢層(affordability + 文化動機)| | 8 | 到達反思層(trading 一種 exclusivity for another kind of flattening)|

Takeaway — Band 6

升級 1:Part 3 不要從 "When I was young..."

Band 6:"When I was young, my family..." Band 7+:"The most obvious change is affordability — low-cost carriers have..."

| Band 6 | Band 7+ | |--------|---------| | cheaper | affordability / low-cost carriers | | convenient | disintermediation / streamlined | | crowded | overcrowding / overtourism | | people take photos | identity performance / visual consumption |

I think travel is more convenient now." Band 7 結尾:"travel is simultaneously more democratic and, in some ways, more superficial." Band 8 結尾:"Whether that's a net gain is, I think, genuinely debatable."

Tension 模板:

  • "So it's more X but also more Y."
  • "We've traded X for Y."
  • "Whether that's a net gain is genuinely debatable."
